Thai Language Day 2012 in Surin Thailand

The Cultural Office of Surin province, in association with Pathum Mek temple, is holding a National Thai Language Day, in honor of His Majesty the King, a revered scholar of the Thai language.

The abbot of the Pathum Mek temple, with Mr. Uthai Pholpuak, of the Surin Cultural Office, helped to jointly open an event to celebrate local languages, part of the activities for National Thai Language Day, 2012. This year’s activities include handwriting contests, news reading, speeches, essay writing competitions, and singing. Students from ten schools are participating. The event is being held in honor of His Majesty the King, who is a highly esteemed scholar of the Thai language, and in deep appreciation of His Majesty’s care and concerns for the use of the Thai language. The aims of the event are to make Thai people aware of the importance of their language and to help in its conservation.

National Thai Language Day falls on July 29, which was the day His Majesty the King visited Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Arts to chair an academic meeting regarding the Thai language fifty years ago.
